Could Eating More healthy Fat Actually help you lose stubborn Fat? For years, and years I used to be terrified of eating fat, thinking that dietary fat would turn into body fat. Like probably a lot of you, I believed what science, the industry, and the media were telling us about eating fat. For many years I aimed to eat the least amount of fat possible in my diet, even healthy fat was restricted.
Eating a low fat, and low calorie to lose weight only worked for me the first time I tried it, when I was in my late teen years, it worked but it also came with side effects from depriving my body of enough fuel, and enough healthy fat, which are much necessary for hormonal balance. The weight eventually came back, and during my twenties I kept trying to use the same restrictive diet and increased my workouts again with minimal results, only more restriction, stress, and obsession with weight and exercise.
In my early thirties, when I started my healing journey, I took a huge step; I quit the gym! It was a very difficult thing to do, but I knew I had to make a change if I wanted to regain my health and freedom. I was having a very difficult time keeping the weight off, in fact I started putting on a bit more weight.
This time as I knew I was healing, I was more patient, but I still wanted to bring my body to a healthy weight. I knew I had to do something different, but I didn’t know exactly what. One day I came across the GAPS diet, which talks about a healing protocol that uses fat for healing the gut. I also came across an Amazing E-book, which I introduce below, that talked about the Ketogenic diet (low carb, high fat). It spiked my curiosity, and I started experimenting with that style of eating. Close to that time, I also started to study Nutrition, so I became a lot more conscious of how I was nourishing my body, and the connection between what I was eating and how I was feeling.
I slowly Increased my intake of healthy fat (animal and plant based) to about 30% to 40%, and sometimes even close to 50%. I experimented with different kinds, and I also reduced the amount of carbohydrates especially from grains. This significantly improved my ability to burn fat, it has helped me heal my relationship with food, heal my digestive system, lose fat, and enjoy food again.
Some of The Benefits That I experienced Eating Healthy Fat
1.- My energy levels increased
2.- I wasn’t hungry all the time. I could fast for up to 16 hours (including sleep hours) and not feel like I was going to go crazy if I didn’t eat.
3.- My periods have become more stable, and less painful. They used to be all over the place.
4.- I didn’t need to eat 6 meals a day. (2 or 3, and maybe one snack, depending on activity level), and I felt totally nourished and satisfied after a meal. On a low fat diet, I used to always feel like I was missing something after a meal, and often reached for something sweet.
5.- My skin and hair became less dry.
6.- For the first time in a long time I started losing body fat, slowly but consistently.
7.- I didn’t need to carry snacks with me everywhere I went, because of fear of my sugar levels getting too low.
8.- I don’t feel deprived and I enjoy food more
9.- I got rid of the fear of eating FAT!
10.- As a bonus, I spend less money on food because by eating more fat I got fuller faster and with less amounts of food.
It can be a bit confusing when trying to figure out how much fat is adequate for your body, and your level of health, so it is a good idea to have some resources that can help you explore a high fat eating style, like the ones I talk about below. But remember, listen to your body to know what works best for you, and don’t force yourself into any diet or plan if it is not feeling right. Have fun experimenting and finding the right nutrients for your body
